Jubilee book for 400-year old polder mill

picture

Poldermolen De Vlieger celebrates its 400th anniversary in 2021. This makes it one of the oldest polder mills in the country. In cooperation with the foundation Molen De Vlieger and the Historische Vereniging Voorburg (Historical Society Voorburg) a jubilee book was made in the series that same-d produces every year for the Historische Vereniging (Historical Society).

The book illustrates the 400-year history with facts, maps and other visual material.

The mill was built in 1621 and was then called Binckhorstmolen. At the time, the area around the Binckhorst castle consisted mainly of polderland. The original indoor windmill was later converted to an upper windmill. In the eighteenth century, the name of the windmill was changed to Molen De Vlieger, also known as Vliegermolen, named after miller Arij de Vlieger.

The area around Molen de Vlieger was given a new purpose in the 1980s. The polder became a residential area and the windmill was moved to the Essesteijn polder in 1989. The well-known sports hall De Vliegermolen was built on the site of the windmill: known for the pop concerts given there by renowned pop musicians.
